Ceramic Recording Form

The Lowland Patayan Ceramic Typology recording form was originally developed over two decades ago as a vital tool for systematically documenting ceramic attributes. As an evolving research instrument, it will continue to be refined as new data emerges. The form’s structure is designed to adapt to ongoing archaeological research, recognizing that modifications are necessary to optimize data collection.

However, the continued evolution of this research has led to questioning the validity of recording certain attributes that may reflect individual potter preferences rather than consistent, regionally replicated characteristics. By ensuring the uniform recording of specific attributes, archaeologists can effectively distinguish characteristics that are ubiquitous across the production region from those that are localized to specific areas or ceramic types. Therefore, the successful continuation of this research hinges on the widespread adoption of this data format by the archaeological community to record Lowland Patayan ceramics.
